The Selous Game Reserve is Africa's largest protected game reserve, covering 54,600 square kilometers of open woodlands, grassy plains, mountains, and forests. Frederick Selous Courtney, a great hunter, and explorer, is the name of this reserve. Mikumi national park is the best way to get away from the large crowds of tourists in northern safari destinations like Serengeti and gives you a great experience with wildlife. It is regarded as one of the county's lesser-known treasures.
In the center of Selous Game Reserve, the River Rufiji—the country's largest river—crosses and creates a unique ecological system of swamps, channels, and lakes. This national reserve is home to a number of wildlife mammals, some of which include: buffaloes, lions, wildebeest, large herds of giraffes, zebras, hippos, impalas, waterbucks, elands, and bushbucks, as well as leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas are all present. In addition, this is one of the few wildlife sanctuaries on the African continent where you can see sable antelopes, puku antelopes, and African wild dogs.
Over 445 distinct bird species can be found in this game reserve, and they have been observed in the reserve's various habitats, such as the African skimmer, giant kingfishers, and pink-backed pelicans along the lake. The white-fronted bee-eater, fish eagle, carmine, ibises, and palm nut vultures can be observed along the sandbanks. Other visible water birds include the purple-crested turaco, yellow-billed stork, trumpeter hornbill, white-crowned spur-winged plovers, malachite kingfishers, and a variety of small waders.
